Getting more exercise is the best way to support healthcare

A recent article by UK active stated that exercise was voted the number one way people can help the National Health Service. Ahead of reducing smoking and drinking, improving diet and paying taxes. We all know that physical activity leads to a healthier body and a more active life. The new research also shines a light on the mental health benefits of physical activity.
In order to move more, we also need to move well. People in pain don’t enjoy exercise, even though it is one of the best remedies. Likewise, people who are overweight, and need to burn more calories, won’t move if it hurts. In the UK alone, over half of people (57%) living with arthritis (and that is a lot of people) say they experience pain every day. Musculoskeletal (MSK) problems are the third largest cost on the NHS budget. Beyond the health service, MSK conditions are also responsible for 30 million working days lost each year, causing a substantial impact on the economy.

Physical activty can save lives, jobs, and the economy. We wrote an article about Physical Activity for Life a while ago. We don’t just mean a better life, but actually saving lives. It is very relevant today, more than ever, as physical fitness is one of few antidotes to falling ill to COVID-19.
