Moovment® + Bikefit = Biomechanics

Sometimes you meet people who are so absorbed in what they do. Michael, Kevin and Alexia live and breathe the science, the art and the philosophy of what they do - in this case, Cycling. The brothers at Bikefit Van Staeyen are cyclists and bike fit experts that work with some of the best professional cyclists in the world, and a good deal of not-so-professional cyclists who just want to enjoy the ride in comfort and without being injured (that’s when Alexia gets a call - she is a Doctor as well).

Bike fit is all about attention to detail and it is all about biomechanics - where (wo)man and machine merge to become one. Otherwise, (wo)man and machine go to war with one another, 90 times per minute for hours on end. The carbon and alloy components on the bike usually outlast the flesh and bones of the rider - whether you like to admit it or not.

Anyone who says that biomechanics does not matter and that performance, productivity and pain are not related to the mechanical forces that we experience on a run, on the bike, on a horse, in a chair, at the desk, in a kayak or behind a bow and arrow - well, put politely, they need to go back to school.

Quality of movement gives us the quality of life that we all deserve. Sometimes that involves adjusting the body, adjusting the shoes, or adjusting the bike. The secret to making the right adjustments for the right configuration is to measure, measure well, and let the data guide any decisions. Some call this biohacking, others call it biomechanics!

Moovment Scan of a beginner cyclist who has a known leg length difference of over 1.5 cm. He plans to take his cycling seriously so he booked a consultation with the professionals at Bike Van Stayen in Antwerp, Belgium. It is obvious from his standing posture that he leans to the right, with over 60% of his body weight on the right leg. More importantly, it affects the performance of his lower limbs, and this was consistent with the bike fit analysis.
